Cary already has USA Baseball, so why not soccer too? Sounds like Atlanta may be the main competition, but U.S. Soccer hasn't officially narrowed things down and could still be a lengthy process.
In addition to the money from Arthur Blank, the USSF also cited sponsorship opportunities like Coca-Cola, that announced a strategic partnership in July, as playing an "important role" in bringing the HQ to Atlanta. Further, Turns Sports is the exclusive media partner of USSF... also headquartered in Atlanta.
Atlanta Airport's 225 destinations around the world and 1,000+ daily flights doesn't hurt either for getting players and visitors to the HQ or Training Center. That's always been a huge positive for the Atlanta region.

Atlanta just has a lot more to offer than a small town like Cary.
