I would suggest looking into Project Enlightenment. It's a "feeder" evaluation program that is hooked up with the school system for young children. Basically they look at your child's particular needs, and then route them through the maze to the most appropriate help (speech, hearing, cognitive, autism, etc.). If nothing else, they'll have all the public school programs & contacts you'll need. We dealt with them with our preschooler who had some speech delays and he qualified for a free year of special education preschool. This is through the school system, so there should be no fee.

I have just enrolled my 2 year old son in Mariposa School for Children with Autism. I don't know if it would be something you would be interested in for your child. Some parents send there children to public school part of the day and then pull them out and they go there in the afternoon. They also have an afterschool program. Just google Mariposa school in Cary and it should come up. My husband and I really liked the tour we had and hope it will really help our son. How severe is your child?
I would contact the Autism Society of North Carolina, they can help you explore your options. I work for them and they are a wonderful resource. They are located in Cameron Village (Raleigh). Autism Society of North Carolina
