I don't want to minimize your concern but the reports that Durham is unsafe are exaggerated. I bet if I checked, I could find police reports for Doha, Qatar? Yes? What areas of Doha should I avoid?
You need to use your common sense and best judgment. Does a place make you uncomfortable? Then get out of there. Driving a car? Lock your doors! On the other hand, there are plenty of friendly people and safe places in Durham.
As for activities, very close to Duke is Eno River State Park. Hiking trails if you want to get exercise.

I googled the police reports yesterday. I focused on the shootings... I did not fully understand any of them...
I did not see areas... that's why I came here to ask further...

OP needs to use some common sense true for any city. Would you walk down the street at night staring at your phone while opening your wallet again and again to count your money?

Don't walk alone, especially at night.
I would suggest you to get a concealed handgun permit but you won't be here long enough.
The crime concerns me which is why I choose to carry. I try to take full responsibility for my safety.
Sure the odds of being a victim are overall low, but its not a chance I am willing to take.
Anywhere near Durham Downtown, including the areas near Duke's east campus and the Hospital on Erwin Rd, can have crime. I used to work at TGI Friday's at Erwin Terrace and we had a policy of walking with our co-workers to their cars for safety in numbers. This happened shortly after one of our line cooks was shot and killed at the gas station at the corner of LaSalle and Erwin.

Do you also blame rape victims for wearing revealing clothing?

Nice try. Please go ahead and throw your money in the air while walking down the street at night. See what happens to it.
OP you don’t need to have a gun to be safe in Durham. Just use common sense which some people don’t seem to have.
