It's going to get worse as far as bike rider safety because some Raleigh gov't leaders are bent on abolishing cars in order to save the planet.
Just trying to understand your logic here, not wanting to argue it. Are you suggesting that reducing the number of cars on the road would make the roads LESS safe for bicyclists?
I can certainly understand there would be a LOT of negative consequences from restricting car infrastructure, but it seems counter-intuitive to me that ONE OF THEM would be making cyclists even less safe from cars (if there are in fact fewer of them out there.)
Again, not to debate it, just can you explain if I understood correctly, and if I did then 'why you feel that way'?
Look, turning Raleigh into Houston is not the vibe most residents are going for. Abolishment of parking minimums is an absolute win, and it’s occurring nationwide.
If you envision ITB as nothing but single family and strip malls with parking lots covering more sq ft than the building itself, you’re stuck in an alternate universe. (Or, at least, an alternate century.)
What's going on in Raleigh isn't motivated by lofty principles of urban planning. Rather, it's motivated by greed. Raleigh cannot grow horizontally much more because it's surrounded by other municipalities. (That said, Raleigh remains quick to accept any voluntary annexation petitions it gets from subdivision developers for as long as it can.) The powers-at-be in Raleigh intend the city to grow vertically. Never mind the consequential expulsion of lower-income residents. Strip shopping centers on major streets are all targets for conversion to apartment complexes of 5 to 7 stories. Just look at what's about to happen on east New Bern Avenue.
Nevertheless, "Raleigh" may indeed evolve into an Atlanta or Houston because the other municipalities in Wake County and certainly not in the surrounding counties (Johnston, Franklin, Granville, Chatham, Harnett, and Lee) don't share the upward-and-onward view that the City does. The market, not the planners, will decide who wins. So far, suburban expansion is outrunning the City's vertical growth and I wouldn't be surprised if it continues to.
NC law says that cyclists are allowed to use the entire lane. If you have a problem with it, take it up with the legislators. These people are doing nothing wrong.
Also, it seems clear that cars are the problem here. They are the ones doing dangerous maneuvers and acting like idiots most of the time. By your logic, it makes more sense that we should take the 2 ton death machines off the road as opposed to removing the healthy, sustainable vehicles that cause far fewer serious accidents.
