Where can I find out information on how many of those touch screen NC lottery vending machines there are in the state and how they are located throughout NC and how scratch off tickets are distributed among them? Internet searches show there's around 1200 lottery vending machines in NC, from a 2020 article.
But there could be more installed since then since it's so easy to sell tickets that way and the clerk doesn't have to spend time doing that.
How does the state decide how to distribute the vending machines? Like are there more installed in rural areas, lower-income areas of the state vs how many vending machines are there installed in say, Cary or Chapel Hill? How are winning tickets split between differing rural/city/lower/upper-income counties? Completely random, but my tin-foil hat goes on and somehow I think that's not true.
Anyone have any tidbits of information or experience?
edit: Meant to post this in the main NC forum, but it's okay, the Triangle subforum has more traffic anyway

Looking to get a Universe93B-Go-Large thing going?
I suspect some stores ask for the vending machines, so they can wait on regular customers without a lot of ticket buyers in line. Plus, the store doesn't have to handle the tix or money.
I have, but not much information on there. Their FAQ answers most generic questions. But not the curiosity questions I posted here.

I called them, but nobody interested in answering questions like this. It was more for things like "Do you have a winning ticket?" or "Do you have a problem that you need to come to the NCEL office for?"

I'm in charge of a study on behalf of a local substance use/addiction treatment clinic/center that is also investigating gambling/lottery tickets addiction. Was trying to do some investigative work. It's well-known that when you treat 1 addiction (such as alcohol or opioids or whatever), the person has a tendency to engage in another dopamine-releasing activity as a compensatory mechanism.
But don't get me wrong, just like Mike The Situation recently, I do like a good variety of scratch off tickets once in a while!

I'd start by emailing and calling the Lottery's Corporate Social Responsibility Specialist with your elevator pitch and try to attract their attention:

It will be interesting to see if you get any information. I'm sure they want to be tight lipped with the details behind their operations, for security purposes.
It does seem like all/almost all of the big winners on scratch offs seem to come from gas stations where the clerk has to hand you a ticket, vs the grocery stores where you can buy them yourselves.

^this 100%
Plus, they can tell the truth and mislead at the same time. They'll likely tell you that 100% of the proceeds go to education (or something great-sounding like that) and it will be true. They will not however tell you that the money going to education just replaces the money that the GA takes out of education to spend on other things.
It is my OPINION that unless you can do a very deep investigation, that you won't be able to get meaningful information. It's like asking a politician if he paid-off a hooker to keep quiet. "No I did not" is a truth, but it ignores that this fictitious politician asked his hypothetical 'fixer' to take care of it and that his own money was used (but HE didn't pay her off)....
^The example above is completely made up. Any similarities to any real people are 100% coincidental.
