A new report by Workforce Insights on LinkedIn ranks our region along with Austin, Texas, Denver and Nashville as the top 4 areas in the United States where the job market is particularly welcoming to workers of all ages. Metros were ranked by the largest share of LinkedIn members of each generation who added an employer to their profile in the same month as a new job began between July 2022 and July 2023. Among the attributes cited as benefiting Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill are access to nature and a strong college presence.
I've definitely seen an increase with "Baby Boomers" working in the Triangle. I think with the shortage of workers and the increase in cost of living, many seniors were open to working these jobs and employers were open to giving them a chance. And as such, they are now starting to realize the benefits of hiring older people.
I think there was a stigma attached to hiring "older" people before. Maybe they thought they would be out on medical leave a lot, not be able to handle the physical or mental part of the job etc. They are now finding out that many of these older people are very dependable, show up for work all the time and are still capable of meeting the job requirements.
