Hello everyone,

Recently, I noticed winged termites in my house and decided to consult a termite control professional. After an examination, the professional suggested treating the termite issue by 1) applying liquid insecticide to the soil surrounding the house and 2) drilling holes every 12 inches on the cinder blocks forming the wall of the crawlspace.

This professional comes highly recommended by my neighbors, and I generally trust their judgment. However, upon conducting a quick search, I could not find many treatments that involve drilling holes in cinder blocks. I'm particularly concerned that drilling 100+ holes throughout the cinder blocks may compromise the integrity of the foundation. Not sure if I am overconcerned.

Below is a photo that illustrates what this treatment might be. Any insights or comments on this matter would be greatly appreciated!

Not uncommon. On top of the cinder blocks is wood making up the floors of your house. If that wood gets all gobbled up by termites, what difference will it make if the cinder blocks are in pristine condition? In other words, you got to do something. You could mention your concerns to the termite guy, and see what he says.

I've seen this done before in a nearby neighborhood - the homeowner is a mechanical engineer and he didn't seem to have a problem with it. I agree with gofunme and ask the guy. The holes are supposed to be drilled to the interior of the cement block from the crawlspace, leaving the outside without any issues and still waterproof/no holes.

It is pretty typical with certain types of treatment chemicals. Some of the newer ones like termidor work better and don’t require drilling, they just trench on the inside and flood it in.
