I have talked to few builders and they want to keep adding more and more because I don't need a shower downstairs I need the door wider, and it is going to cost me more, a lot of small things that I need to change, even though I am taking stuff away from the home it is still coming up to more. Like I said before I am in no way looking for a handout just trying to find a logical builder, that I can use, that will actually remember or conversation.
I'd suggest you decide upon a price range and decide upon an area that you'd like to live in.

Hopefully, in the area you choose, you'll be able to find a custom builder. The tract builders seldom will make changes other than the basics and most won't remove a wall or add a larger doorway if that is not their norm.

Picking out a flat lot in a neighborhood that has a good selection shouldn't be that difficult.

At The Park At West Lake, they have a section called The Commons that has ranch plans with small lots and the yards are taken care of for you. The builder is a custom builder and will happily do what you need to have done. Have you considered something like that?

Hi robandkelly,

I'm so glad you posted this question - I am in a wheelchair and my husband and I are hoping to buy in the Raleigh area next spring. I've also been wondering about new construction and the cost of having doorways widened etc. How expensive is it compared to the base price, to have such changes made? Have you tried meeting with a real estate agent to discuss what your options might be?

Good luck with your search - seems you are starting to get some good info here, hopefully more will come in.

There are definitely a few smaller custom home builders that work very well with disability and wheelchair accessibility. If you're working with Specially Adapted Housing through the VA, they may have some recommendations of builders in the area.

One of the biggest challenges to the total cost of the home can be finding an affordable lot.

Some builders charge a great deal for changes, others are very flexible and can incorporate many changes at the planning stage.
