My wife's birthday is this Sunday and I was hoping to do something outdoors with her (depending on the weather). We have done wafting on the Eno, which was great (highly recommended - Wafting the Eno River). We have also done the Sarah P. Duke gardens. (The Sarah P. Duke Gardens).

Does anyone have any ideas? Anything within an hour or so of RTP would be great. Thanks in advance!

Matt

Well, if it is hot like this past weekend....I would say head to one of the area lakes. My favorite is Jordan Lake in Chatham Co.

If she likes wine....go do some wine tasting. Just google NC wines. There is one right close to Durham

although this is not "outdoorsie" we have a great time going to the raleigh road theater in henderson for the traditional "drive in" movie theater. It is quite fun to bring some good food, a cooler, some chairs (if you don't want to sit in your car) and watch first run movies!!!!

Looks like the heat wave will be gone after tomorrow and the weekend will be closer to 90 than 100. Here are a few ideas:

1) Disc Golf at Harris Lake (just watch for ticks) - excellent course out there.
2) Geocache - all over
3) Rent a sailboat at Lake Crabtree
4) Hike at Umstead
5) Bike the area greenways or American Tobacco Trail

A hike at Hanging Rock State Park, Dublin wine Vineyards (tour and tasting), movies on the lawn at the NC Art museum. Bring a picnic basket and a bottle of wine, Canoeing at one of the local lakes.

A hike through the North Carolina Museum of Art's greenway/scuplture trails, including a visit to the Cloud Chamber (a dark room is always romantic?!) and ending in a cool wonderful lunch at the Museum restaurant!

Southern Village Market Street Shops

The North Carolina Symphony Orchestra is giving a free concert at Southern Village on Friday June 13th. There are several nice places to eat at Southern Village so you could grab a bite to eat and then sit outdoors and listen to the music under the moonlight.

LOVE that course! I am only a few miles away and play there as much as I can. Buying a boat this week so maybe I can take it out and retrieve my 20 or so lost discs from the lake at holes 8-11 lol.
From your house, you would just hit 751 and take it all the way to the park on the right. Probably a 20 minute (relatively scenic) drive.

How about a Segway tour of Raleigh. Triangle Segway runs them. Either 45 mins or 2 1/2 hrs. Check out their website

Jazz Brunch at Weaver Street Market (outside): Weaver Street Market - Jazz brunch

You could rent a pedal boat at Pullen Park.

The Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh is beautiful and tends not to have a lot of people: JC Raulston Arboretum - Home Page (just don't go Saturday as parking around there will be tough with Race for the Cure).
