Oops I of course mean 1/16/07...can't seem to change the typo in the thread title !!
I Just heard on WRAL news this evening that the newest part of I-540 from Traingel town center to the new 64 Bypass will open next Tueday (1/16). I can't believe it is finally going to open. I plan on checking it out right away.
I seriously considered living in Planters Walk Subdivison in Knightdale for a while but was concerned that having I-540 run through the middle of the subdivision would make it a bit noisy and may lead to gengestion in the are in the years to come. I guess now I will get to see if that is the case! I was also concerned that it would be too much of a commute if I ever ended up working in RTP down the road.

Reason: typo in thread title
They say this will alleviate some of the traffic on 401 North and Fox Rd. Hmm. I certainly hope so. Looks nice though. And finally the Interstates in the area are getting some long needed lights. Much of this new stretch is lit. Unlike I-40 and the existing parts of I-540
From yesterays's News & Observer Article on the Opening of the nection of I-540:
"It takes Knightdale resident Mark Maxwell about an hour on congested days to get from his house off Hodge Road to his office in Research Triangle Park. He hopes to cut his commute time almost in half by using the new I-540 extension. "I get to sleep later," Maxwell said of the benefits. "It makes everything a lot easier. Traffic is stressful. It's bad for your car. I'll get to spend more time with my family."
The convenience is what's causing more people to move to Knightdale. The town's population is projected to jump 23 percent to 10,078 between 2006 and 2011, according to census estimates by Demographics Now. That's twice the growth rate projected for the entire region."
Sounds good, but I really have to wonder how long it will be before the explosion of population growth out there negates any commuting benefit I-540will provide in the near future. Freeways create there own demand and once you start chasing traffic congestion it never ends! Hopefully they will do some decent planning out there and not let it turn into a strip of Big box stores like every other place in the country.
