Howdy all,

My wife and I have been to the Triangle area 3x in the last 12 months and are seriously considering moving.

I am having a hard time finding information on jobs in the area. Specifically, i am trying to find information on salaries. I am in the IT field and I know there are jobs in the area, but I don't know how much those jobs actually pay.

The job boards are great but employers don't usually list what their willing to pay. Does anybody have any ideas / websites that could give me some real data on what people make for their field / title?

I have been to salary.com and I have combed the job boards. The information is usally very vague or covers a huge swath (i.e. a Network administrator gets paid between $$ & $$$$.)

I am looking for some new ideas and any help would be much appreciated. I am about to post my resume but I am not looking forward to all the headhunter calling with inflated claims.

Maybe you can try approaching the problem from a different angle. Try using a cost of living calculator (available on many websites - just Google for one) to determine the delta between your city and Raleigh. It may be that salary differences mirror the cost of living differences -- or would NEED to for you to maintain your current lifestyle.

I'm a SW engineer and just moved here from Dallas. The cost of living calculators said that the difference was less than 1% higher in Raleigh. I was offered a job here with a higher salary, but the benefits and bonuses were less, so it ended up being a wash.

I would check fidelity investments job posting in Raleigh, there is going to be a big hiring plan there.

Try www.salary.com. Click on the tools tab for the salary wizard. I found it very informative.

This a link for the state job postings, search under IT, look at Wake county or Raleigh. Not sure how they compare to the private sector but at least they post their salaries. http://www.osp.state.nc.us/jobs/

Thanks to all! I am going to pour over the links tonight.

From an IT point of view, is there anything that you found different / odd / unique besides salary? Any pleasant surprises?

I agree with newuser. Run a cost of living calculator. I think salary range is a good thing going into a market, but salary and other perks come from negotiating.

I've always used engineersalary.com when helping my husband with employment research. Also, dice.com has some salaries posted for tech jobs that the other job search engines don't. So you can do a cross comparison and often recognize a job that was being advertised on say monster.com and find out how much they are planning to pay. HTH!

I've been a IT/Telecom recruiter in the area for over seven years. If you tell me what your skill set is, I can give you my input on what your rate range may be by what I see at work. Again, it has to be a range, but hopefully a narrower one that what you are seeing on job boards.
