Just beware Chapel Hill and OC are the most expensive places to go in the Triangle; you really need some serious money to get in over there. To varying degrees, the entire triangle gay-friendly. Durham and outlying towns will be much, much, much, more affordable, though walkability will be more of an issue, finding close community will be a lot more of an issue, and the total onslaught of progressive culture you get in CH/Carrboro may be a bit more diluted. Durham has gotten some national press for it's gay-friendliness and for usurping a lot of the DIY spirit that once made Chapel Hill famous, but Durham also gets knocked for crime, which it certainly does seriously have in certain places, and it's a lot sparawlier, not like a quaint stroll around downtown Carrboro.
I guess part of the charm of the Triangle is that you can drive from the most interesting spots to another without wasting too much time and gas.
Similarly, Chapel Hill does currently have an openly gay city councilman (their second one in fact...the first served in the 80s). If I recall, he's on his second term.
In the 5 years since this thread was started, said councilman was elected Chapel Hill's mayor! Carrboro still holds the record for being the first North Carolina town with an openly gay mayor.
