I asked a similar one on the greensboro board. This cost of gas is keeping me from going anywhere lately, even to Raleigh from Durham! And I haven't spent any time in downtown Raleigh and I want to wander around. Plus I love trains.

So if just for fun I take the train from Durham to Raleigh and wander around for the day, are there good shops and restaurants around the train station? I feel like playing tourist there. I guess I would really be a tourist since I never go there.

I wish we had a train that went to the beach !

The Raleigh train station is pretty much in the warehouse district, which is hit or miss. There are a few art galleries and restaurants in that area, but there aren't as many neat little shops as there should be. The area is ripe for development, but because CSX and the TTA own parcels of land around there, development has been slow. But fear not, things to see are not far of a walk! Fayetteville St, Moore Square and City Market are a few blocks north and east, and Glenwood South is a few blocks north and west.

That does sound fun. Wish we could do this! I just priced it out for me and the kids, and it would be $26 to take the train (only about $12 for a single person). In my car it would take about 1/4 tank, or $10, so it's still cheaper to drive. or maybe

Now I have taken the TTA to downtown Raleigh from Chapel Hill (also leaves from Durham)... it was about $2 one-way then.

We ate at Joe's featuring Joe's Mama's Food - or something like that. I wasn't crazy about it because I like sandwiches & nothing like that on the menu from what I remember. I think I ended up with a burger or something. The people I was with thought it was decent.

TTA is a great deal and the new buses are great.

Just wanted to throw out there that we are very close to the day when you can ride a bike from Durham to Raleigh, downtown to downtown, without ever leaving a greenway. I really look forward to that.

Here is an old N&O article from Joe Miller talking about the plans.
newsobserver.com |Get Out! Get Fit! - Greenway update: Cary's White Oak Creek

It is from last summer, and things continue to move forward. If the Tobacco Trail bridges would get completed then you could easily get on the road for some short stretches and do the rest before the greenway gets done. (The White Oak Greenway in Cary is very, very nice.)
