I just saw that Raleigh has had 17 murders so far this year. That rate is twice as much as last year at this point. What is going on? Is it because of robberies? Why do people feel they have to murder someone when they rob them? Do these thugs not have any emotion anymore? What is Durham's murder count up to this year? I think it is less than Raleigh, which would be the second time in three years Raleigh's has been higher.
Durham - Estimated population in July 2006: 209,009
Raleigh - Estimated population in July 2006: 356,321
Raleigh's not quite twice as populous, yet Durham still keeps up with it in absolute numbers.
19 YTD compared to 23 all of last year in Raleigh
14 YTD compared to 26 all of last year in Durham
I don't want to get into a Raleigh vs. Durham pissing contest here, but Raleigh is at nearly 83% of last year's murder total, and it's only 6 months through the year. Raleigh is "on pace" to have 38 murders this year.
Durham, on the other hand, the proverbial wart on the triangle's face some would have you believe, is at 54% of last year's total, and "on pace" to be at the same number of murders for 2008 as was the case in 2007.
One could make a reasonable argument that while there were more murders per capita in Durham last year, that the statistical trends indicate that Raleigh is worsening RAPIDLY.

You are so correct about the trend. Raleigh's problem seems to be growing at an absolutely incredible rate. This is a major cause for concern.
I know people will want to play certain number games with population and percentages to make Durham seem worse than Raleigh, but to the families of the 17 people killed in Raleigh so far, I don't think they care about the percentages. To them, they know there are more murders in Raleigh the last few years and it is way out of control.
While this years numbers are concerning, you have to look at trends for many years and the circumstances surounding these murders. How many were domestic voilence related as compared to gang activity, etc. Murders are Murders, but murders in and of itself do not always tell you the level of violence in a city as a whole.

Funny, that is the argument that I always make when people try to analyze the crime in Durham (there was a long thread on the topic lately that got locked), but most of the pro-Raleigh/anti-Durham will hear nothing of it.
I wonder if they will come here to argue with your point.
