Does anyone know of any newer, highend apartment buildings in Raleigh? Looking for something with amenities and a concentration of young professionals, in close proximity to nightlife/restaurants/shopping/etc.

Oberlin Court and Gateway Park are two apartment buildings that are pretty new (like built within the past few years) that are on the periphery of downtown, so that would make them pretty close to nightlife/restaurants, etc...while also having a good number of young professionals.
Oberlin Court is where Oberlin Road meets Wade Avenue, near Cameron Village.
Gateway Park is near the Boylan Heights area, where Lake Wheeler Rd meets Saunders.
Another that should be opening up soon (if not already) would be Carlton Place, nearby City Market/Moore Square Art District.

Sounds like some neat places. Is there any good bookstores located in the downtown areas?

For Raleigh, bookstores are probably THE retail sector most sorely lacking in the immediate downtown core. (Although Durham and Chapel Hill have been able to buck that trend.) Unless you count the gay/lesbian one, but that's another story. lol There's been talk a few times of someone maybe someday putting one in...like at City Market or Fayetteville Street...time will tell.
There are two indy used bookstores on Hillsborough Street just west of the NCSU campus--Nice Price and Reader's Corner. Also, there's Quail Ridge Bookstore on Wade Ave at Faircloth Rd, which is probably the largest Indy bookstore in the region.
