I am a western New Yorker.. I moved to north central florida 2 years ago, and let me tell you that among the high housing costs, and scenery, the racism would be #3 on my list for leaving florida.. I cant speak for any other states officially, but i know racism is definately much more prominent in the southern states. From what i have seen, it is mostly more prominent because racism has just been passed down from the generations.. most people not really knowing why they are racist, only because "their daddy's daddy, and their daddy were all racist" . Again, i cant speak for anywhere but here, but it is equally bad on both sides.. i meet just as many racist black people (if not more), as i do white people. Everyone above me says that you dont see much racism in NC, so i'll cross my fingers, and hope thats true.

The Klan & other like-minded groups are active ALL over the country, with the help of the internet more than old-fashioned leaflets.

Sounds like a bunch of Bologna to me. Don't believe everything you hear. I mean, don't get me wrong, there are ignorant people everywhere but I don't think Raleigh has a race problem. How can it with all the diversity?

I don't know about a 'hotbed'...but hate organizations do exist and they are active in the area. That being said….I don’t find there is much overt racism around that I see….certainly no more (and often less) then other areas of the country.

The Southern Poverty Law Center, though their Hate Watch arm, have a map posted of active groups. Here is a link to the map of NC.

http://www.splcenter.org/intel/map/hate.jsp?S=NC&m=4

However, notice that all states have such groups. It isn’t just a ‘Southern’ thing.

Also, the Anti-Defamation League lists hate group events in 2006.

http://www.adl.org/learn/Events_2001...c=NC&Year=2006

For instance, the leader of a KKK group, Charles Barefoot (who wasn’t caught until 2006) planned to blow up the Johnson County courthouse and kill the Sheriff.

Here is a link to the story about the KKK having a phone book listing.

http://www.wral.com/news/local/story/141533/

Also, the NAACP website talks about it.

http://www.naacpncnetwork.org/Public...hone+book.html

Also, WRAL has some articles of the leaflets that were mentioned by another poster.

This is another article where the KKK blames growth issues on all manner of things:

http://www.newsobserver.com/102/story/485344.html (broken link)

Thankfully this is several years ago, but on Feb. 21, 2004 the KKK did hold a rally in Raleigh. I didn’t find much on WRAL and the N&O websites (I may just have missed it)…but here are other mentions Warning, some of these links are the actual hate groups.

The last FBI stats for race-related hate crimes I've seen for NC indicated 0.53 crimes per 100,000 residents. That's the 9th lowest in the United States.

You can view how all the states compare here:

http://www.statemaster.com/graph/cri_hat_cri_rac_rel_percap-crimes-race-related-per-capita

The 2005 FBI stats can be found here:

http://www.fbi.gov/ucr/hc2005/index.html

Raleigh reported 6 race-related hate crimes in 2005.

Well said, Desamonde.

The term "organization" to me engenders visions of some large entity and it's doubtful anything large and well organized is here. The rally photos show a lot more police than KKK nutcases and as Desamonde mentioned it was back in 2004. It's certainly not a yearly event and as we can see from this thread hardly anyone even knows the KKK exists at all in the area.

It's interesting that you found a link by a "hate group" in Chapel Hill which is considered a liberal mecca.

Overall, and I think Desmonde can probably agree, if we had a really strong presence of so-called hate groups - then we'd see a whole lot more news on it as the media loves to focus on such topics.

Interesting stat, mm34b, and good news for us all.

The link the the Chapel Hill website was not from a hate group - it was to a group that was seeking to organize a counter protest to them. The other link in that group was from an actual hate group. (I was going to include another, but I didn't feel it really said much.)

After coming across this information, I asked a black friend of mine who went to N.C. State about the racial climate. He basically said that there are some racial issues in the area.
This is disturbing because firstly, I don't want to be solicited by bigots to join the KKK. Secondly, in the future when I have children I don't want them to be at risk, because I raised them to be colorblind. Is a part of the Raleigh culture that is conveniently being swept under the rug?
The KKK has been known to do what you've stated (handing out leaflets in full wardrobe). It has happened in Raleigh at least within the last 6 years. Not belittling this but it's not the image you'd conjure when you think of the KKK in the late 19th and early 20th century.

Having said that though, Raleigh is a great place for any middle class person/family of any race. Of all the families I've known to relocate to that area (some are returning "home" after many years up north, others are there for the first time...) it's not an issue. Admitentantly they may have been on the lookout for it (overt racism) but stopped looking for it because it's not there on any wide scale.

Post Info

Well here are some links to the information.

This just concerns me because I have friends who say L.A. still hasn't recovered from the O.J. case. I just hope situations like those above and the Duke Lacrosse case don't do the same to the Raleigh area.
