Moved to a small town in WA. For the first time, they CHARGED ($1/day) for DVDs and CDs, but they were free if in the educational section.
Have spent time in Wilmington, NC, Lumberton, NC, Fairmont, NC. All have movies and books on CDs, as well as most now have free streaming content.
Wake County, as far as I know, has the weakest libraries for the population of any library system I've seen, AND is the only one where the libraries do not have video and audio media.
I've suggested charging a nominal fee, and only having older, cheaper material. There is absolutely no interest in the library system for anything other than doing what we're doing now.
What on earth are you talking about??? There are tons of CD's, audio books, and DVD's at the Wake Country Library. And the Durham County Library.

Wanna see a bad library system? Have a visit to Mesa, AZ sometime.

Indeed. I don't know what that poster is on or which branches he's been to. There was always plenty of audio content at the North Regional Library when we lived in N. Raleigh.

I go to the West Regional Library and when I asked about DVDs or CDs for kids, I was told the library is strictly books.

What on earth are you talking about? The Wake County Public Library has Audio Books on CD for all ages, and downloadable audiobooks for all ages, but there are no music CDs and no DVDs anywhere in the system.

The budget was so bad for a number of years there wasn't money to buy books, let alone other media. The decision was made to prioritize reading materials when money was available.

Now that the budget has rebounded, the director of the system was recently asked at a staff forum if that priority would be revisited. He said, considering the availability of services like Netflix and Amazon Prime, "that ship has sailed".

So come on down and get your reading materials, but if you want videos or music, you'll have to get with the 21st century and stream them.

Yeah, there is no video content at that library. I'm guessing it's not cost effective with the number of people who just stream content from a Roku or whatever.

our old library in NY has started charging to rent DVDs, etc. Used to be free.

Please consider financial support for our libraries.
I consider them an asset to the community worthy of a place on my gift list.
