Hello,

I'm moving to Durham on monday (21st) and am keen on the old soccer...

...According to Google maps there's a pitch at Piney Wood Park which looks like it'll only be 20 minutes or so away from where I'm staying.

Does anyone know if there are regular games there (serious or kick about), and how would an out of towner like myself get involved?

I've got in touch with the Chapel Hill and Carrboro league via their website and am waiting to hear back from themselves, so I'm just seeing what else is available.

I'm 23 years old too, obviously there'll be age restrictions with some leagues.

Cheers,

Colm

Hi Colm,

Welcome to Durham. For men's soccer in the Durham area CHAC (I'm assuming that is the Chapel Hill/Carrboro league you contacted) is probably your best bet. The other place you can try is TASL (Triangle Adult Soccer League) but I believe they are more Raleigh/Cary based. Rainbow in Chapel Hill also has an adult division but I'm sensing you may want to play a bit more competitively however if you call their office they might be able to direct you to some pickup games. You may also want to put a call into Durham Parks & Rec although I think their men's program all moved to CHAC.

For pickup -- I don't know if anything is happening at Pineywoods this summer. However a neighbor told me that other evening that the men were playing at Herndon Park on Tues/Thurs night (at least I think he said Tues/Thurs). I know I've seen them there just can't remember which night. I just know it's not Mondays as that is "ladies night". Herndon is located at 511 Scott King Rd so if you are near Pineywood then hopefully Herndon is also close.

Hello Mom!

Thanks for the information...

...I think I'm stuck until I get a car sorted (after driving lessons); with CHAC you have to register first and then they put you into a team which isn't ideal if said team is on the other side of town.

Rainbow looks quite interesting but again I think it's too far out for the time being.

I'm staying in an apartment near the Streets at Southpoint, going by Google Maps Herndon Park looks like it might be suitable. I'll do a bit of research into that and see what I can get.

Thanks again.

Colm

Hi Colm,

Not sure where are staying by the Streets of Southpoint -- but if you are south of 40 you might want to consider taking the American Tobacco Trail to Herndon Park. There is a trailhead right at the Park and a couple of others along the way. The trail isn't paved in that section but I think it is still bikeable.

Good luck!
