When my wife and I move my salary will remain approximately the same in the low 100's. But my wife is a PA and makes $50 per hour here on Long Island. I expect her pay will drop, but by how much? Does anyone know what a PA with 10 years might make? My wife has experience in private practice (GI) but spent most of her time in the ER.

After the income taxes and property taxes on Long Island, you barely can survive eating beans every night.

That's why people are flocking here from LI.

PAs and NPs in the Boston Metro area make well over 100K. A good friend of mine is an NP at MGH and makes about 125K/yr. I'll bet LI is about the same, if not more. I'm not certain about PA salaries throughout the Triangle but the range at Duke is broad...likely beginning in the low to mid 60's to about 103K, depending on experience etc. They lump NPs and PAs together as "physician extenders". I was an RN for over 20 yrs before I became an NP 10 years ago and I was started at the upper end of the scale.

Any advice for my career field?

Also what would be considered a good amount of money for a young married couple to live comfortably on, with no kids, in say a 250k house in Cary. 100k combined??
All depends on your downpayment, car payments, insurance payments, other payments (like school etc.) -- it's hard to define a debt to earnings ratio on the cost of a house and gross income!

That said, if you have any equity in a condo and can put it on a house, you have decent credit ratings, don't have too much outstanding debt, you should be fine provided you don't go spending like drunken sailors just after arrival (getting new cars, etc.)

Good luck!

I heard NP's make just as much in NC as they do in NY but RN's in NC makes much less then in NY, is that true. If thats the case I'll have her speed up her masters a little and get her NP quick.
