I think that all 3 are great, but would probably choose Lochmere based on location. I found that Preston has more airport noise than I was willing to put up with. I work in RTP, so Sunset Ridge was a little bit of a drive.

All three are great areas.
You might like the schools better in Preston. Yes, Preston has more airplane noise than the other two.

I will second Mike's thought on Preston being a good one.

Only some of Preston is in the noise zone and just barely at that. I have never had any issues with airplane noise and I really don't like noise.

Since you asked about 3 golf course communities I'll add my 2 cents in that regard. Lochmere golf is by far the worst of those 3. Preston is sweet but > $30,000 just to join. Devil's Ridge(golf course in Sunset Ridge) is a great course, private, but affordable. Hope that helps.

If you're sending your children to public school, my vote would be for Preston because it feeds into Green Hope High. The area is very attractive and extremely convenient. We lived near Preston (just east of Cary Parkway off of High House) and the airplane noise is a non issue (at least with the section of Preston near Prestonwood).

I agree. You could also pick any neighborhood surrounding Preston and still join the Country Club. You don't have to live in Preston to be a member.
