I feel like I've seen that "smokestack" all summer. I usually see it on my left driving westbound on 540 just around the airport/glenwood exits. I also see it on my right driving south on Glenwood from Brier Creek. I have no idea what it is....tree burning? They are always clearing land somewhere

I e-mailed the NC Department of Air Quality and just heard back:

\\The stack that you inquired about is part of the site remediation (cleanup) activities at the former Ward Transformer Site on Mt. Herman Road. The stack and the associated steam plume are part of the soil removal and remediation activities for the site. Additional information is available at the EPA website for Ward Transformer (http://www.epa.gov/region4/waste/npl/nplnc/wardxfnc.htm ) If I can be of further assistance, please feel free to contact me.

Sincerely,
Thanks for sharing that info! Hubby asks me about it every other day! He, like my children, are under the impression that I know everything that goes on in the area!!!

OK I read it and read it again and then I read it a 3rd time and I still can't see anything regarding the smoke stack. They found contaminants in the land, water, fish, turtles, etc.. around the facility and had meetings on contaminate removal actions, so are we to believe that as long as the contaminants are collected burnt and spread via the atmosphere all is well in and around the Transformer facility? Is the smoke stack giving off signals perhaps, one puff is bad and two puffs is semi-bad, and continuous smoke breather beware??? Got Smoke??? I think I liked it better when I believed it was just smoke from someone frying ribs or chicken.......
