Yes, those are the ones I was thinking about - what was that community's name??

I don't like the look of vinyl...out of curiosity (cuz I'm not buying anytime soon) - does hardiplank look like natural wood? I hate the look of vinyl on old bungalows but I wonder about the others.

The stucco issue intrigues me because in FL I noticed that a lot of people covered their cement block homes in it, but I suppose it's the kind that breathes?

Issues I see with Vinyl;
It melts if you grill too close to it (or if you have a very low grade vinyl and get light refraction from an adjacent window...rare but happens)
It is relatively easily damaged by weed trimmers, golf balls, rocks thrown from mowers, hail etc....
It can detach from the house during heavy winds if it is not properly secured (a piece here and there)

I have it on my house, and don't mind it one bit.

scorp - there are many different profiles/facings available and some do favor natural wood, but most appear similar to the hardboard used in the 80's and 90's.
Im with ya on the old bungalows with vinyl...just not right.

That's funny!

Well my house is on a slab and is all vinyl. Is this what I really wanted, heck no! It's a very nice home, but I agree vinyl does not hold up as well and is not as pretty. We'll just have to work our way up to a brick home with a crawl space!

Found it - it's Maida Vale

Those houses are straight out of CA (and priced like it too!)

Your insurance company will ding you in MA if you own a home w/ a flat roof, or if a significant portion of it (such as an addition) has a flat roof. Flat roofed homes are not that common but you do see them. You even see the occasional stucco here. What you don't see often here (even though most all the homes, even the expensive ones in NoVA had it) is vinyl siding.

I figured the vinyl issue was safety related. With the wild weather in Virginia, I always wondered about it.

I am in the same vinyl boat, although my front is partial brick. I can't afford a brick home, my home is also nice, I do agree vinyl is not the best choice, but that's what I have, so be it. If the OP wants to send over a mason pre-paid, I will be happy to have the house finished in all brick

as far as siding melting, if you're that (fill in the blank) to have your barbecue grill up against the house, then it's not a siding issue.

Thank you!! Obviously I was trying to ignore the place every day I picked up my child from Creekside (right next door.) Maybe that's why I spaced the name.

Yeah, if I'm dropping 700K + on a house in this area, it had better have a MUCH bigger lot than those tiny places or be on the water.

Default it all comes down to cost

and upkeep......we've looked at so many homes and feel in love with a few that were hardiplank..... but its costly to have it repainted from what I understand.....when I asked around when we were there I was told like every5/8 years I guess depending on how much direct sunlight it gets.....when mulitplied by a couple thousand dollars that adds up.....

I have vinyl here and granted it doesnt look as nice as the hardiplank it is cost effective and easy upkeep.....

When we finally do get down there my husband said he'd rather brick or stacked stone and vinyl than the hardiplank (although as I said I do like the look of the hardiplank w/stacked stone) because he can easliy give the home an overhaul/cleanup with his powerwasher at a minimal cost vs the repainting and caulking of the hardiplank
