Last night we found a bat flying around in the garage and then he landed on the garage ceiling beams

We left the garage open all night but he hasn't moved.

I don't want to kill it but I don't want it there either.

Any suggestions???

He might leave tonight about a half an hour after dusk. And hopefully you can then shut the door and he will not be interested in coming back. They do prefer quiet, warm roosts.

But, um, if you have gable vents to your house you might want to check those for bats hanging on them and check your attic. We recently had unwanted guests.

And we recently had a thread on bats! Beware! Their poop is very harmful!!! I know that doesn't sound like I am serious but it is a serious health issue.

wow, so bats can get into the gable vents??? I have gable vents on my home...how would you know if bats are in the attic? I haven't been in my attic in over a year, since my walk through last year before closing. I find no need to go in the attic, I don't store anything up there...hmmmm
note: go in attic and check for bats this weekend...LOL

They are usually found "hanging" on the gable vents & bug screen. But if you have no bug screens on your vents or other small cracks they can get in and be usually anywhere "high" hanging in your attic. If you do have bug screen on your vents, and you find them hanging on it, they will eventually get in because their guano rots the screen. A stainless steel mesh is what is recommended.

Don't they like heat? Can you point a fan in that direction and see if it aggravates him enough to leave?
