Indeed. A pool is costly to maintain and is often viewed as a deal-breaker by the majority of buyers here in NC.

You can use your pool earlier and later in season with an auto cover and heater. Costs all depend on the options you want and how hard or easy it is to access the area you want it installed.

Vinyl = economy
Fiberglass = midlevel (limited on size because it has to be shipped on the road)
Concrete = high end (you can do any custom shape)

Let you budget be your guide. You've got to think not only about the pool, but fence, grading, landscape repair (it's a pretty intrusive process), electric, decking, and retaining walls needed. Many pool companies will sell you a pool and you think it's a deal but it's just the pool.
Get a landscape designer who can draw up a plan and looks at different layouts with you. They can design the shape and how it fits into the patio - but leave all the filtration and pool options to the pool guys. They'll work with the pool installers to make sure all the pieces of the puzzle fit together. Pool guys (especially the econo, cheap installers) often consider the pool with blinders on the to rest of the project. They plop the pool in and you're left to figure out how to make the rest of the landscape "fit to it".

You can use your setup all year 'round if you get the heater and have a spa put in!!
