My wife and I are moving to the Raleigh-Durham-RTP area at the end of the year and are having a hard time deciding between two areas. We are the furthest thing from what you would call religious, but have grown up primarily in areas with a stronger Jewish population (e.g. Long Island, and South Florida) and accustomed to at least having a few Jewish families in the surrounding blocks. We recognize that NC in general has a MUCH smaller Jewish population, which is fine - but were wondering if someone could help enlighten us on the populations in these two areas (Cary v N. Raleigh) and what we might expect?

The short answer to your question is: North Raleigh has more established Jewish community.

Expect that the Jewish population is spread thoughout the triangle and that your best bet would pick a area because you like the area and then join a temple to keep your religious ties intact. You will most likely have more in common with people that come from the same state as you do, than are Jewish. I come from LI and my hubby is Jewish, we live in a Cary neighborhood that out of 240 homes about 15 families are Jewish, but about 1/2 the families are from the NorthEast.

Thanks, Sylnn. If you don't mind disclosing, which part of Cary or which subdivision do you live in? The ones we were looking at in Cary didn't even have that high of a percentage - we were looking in the Lochmere area.

I live in the West Cary area.
How did you find out how many Jewish people lived in the Lochmere area?

You may want to base your decision on what congregation you choose to join--the majority of the temples and the jcc are in North Raleigh--cary does have Beth Shalom and Chabad of Cary, but Beth Or, Beth Mayer and another chabad center are in North Raleigh

Default happy

If you are not very religious I would then base it on other items and make sure you would be happy with all other elements of the area.

There a lot of Jewish families in North Ridge in North Raleigh. I grew up there. Many of the families came from New York with IBM.
