Hi,

I'm planning to apply the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill next year to do an MBA. I wanna know how good is the MBA program? How is the city in terms of cost of living compared to other cities in general?. How good are the job opportunities in the marketing/advertising industry? Any advice would be great.

The MBA program at UNC-Chapel Hill (the b-school name is Kenan-Flagler) is very prestigous and difficult to get in to. They offer a number of executive and regular programs. For an (?)objective opinion, see the Business Week ranking of MBA Schools:
Business School Rankings and Profiles: EMBA, Executive Education, MBA, Part-time MBA, Distance MBA

and also the US News and World Report rankings:
Search - Business - Best Graduate Schools - Education - US News and World Report
Carolina regularly ranks in the top 20.

As for the cost of living, the only calculator I found that includes PR is this one:

http://swz.salary.com/costoflivingwi...=141&x=35&y=16

From this, it looks like the salary increase would exceed the expense increase quite nicely! ( I used Raleigh-Durham as a proxy for Chapel Hill. Buying a house in CH might be more expensive than R-D, but in my experience renting would be about the same).

I don't have any knowledge of the marketing/advertising industry, sorry!

Just a tip: you might want to edit the name of your post (if possible) to be more specific about your question as 'moving from PR to NC' is general and yet your questions are quite specific. You may get a better response that way.

I have 2 friends that moved here from Puerto Rico and they haven't had any problems. One is a young single professional, and the other is a family.

You are going to find stupid people everywhere, so I won't say that you will never encounter some racism....but you shouldn't have many problems if any.

When I lived in MA years ago, I noticed lots of prejudice againest anyone Hispanic (especially Dominicans and Puerto Ricans)....so I'd say it's much worse there then in NC.

What Zoya said...there are ignorant people everywhere. I think Durham hosts a Latin Festival each year. There is a large Latin community in the Triangle. Also, if you get homesick, there is a Paso Fino horse show on the first Monday of the State Fair in Raleigh (October), and a fairly big show in Asheville at the end of June. Not as many Puros as you'd see at home, but some nice horses at any rate.

Saludos!
