How is car insurance costs in North Carolina? I am guessing it has to be better then in NJ. I pay about $1,800 for a 2004 sedan and 2006 SUV. That is with high deductibles.
We have a 2006 Highlander and 2002 Grand Am and for a $500 deductible with Geico we pay about $800 a year (for 2 adult drivers with no accidents on record)
Mine actually went up when I moved here from Northern VA, which really annoys me. I raised my deductibles to $1000 (or maybe higher) to keep my premiums the same. I'd definitely shop around.

Same here, Virginia Beach -> Raleigh premiums went up around 15%.
When we moved from NJ 3 years ago, our 2 car policy went from about $2,000/year to $1,000/year....HALF! BUT I will tell you that when we moved, we got a quote from our current insurance company whom we had and were happy with for many years. Their quote was crazy....not much different for NC than our NJ rates. Luckily, I decided to check out a few local rates and got a different story.
So moral is, that I don't think you will get a huge drop if you stay with the same insurance company (if you do great) but you must definitely get local quotes.
Well, I have a 2001 Toyota MR2 and a 2003 Mazda MPV and pay $800/year with a $1K deductible. One driver, discount for having my homeowners insurance with them, and the Toyota is "pleasure driving only." No claims in forever, no tickets. The MR2 doesn't count as a sports car - the insurance cost is the same as the minivan.
I know for sure I could do better with someone else other than State Farm at this point - I just have to decide if the "guaranteed renewal" I have is worth anything. I've been with them 20+ years, and basically they can't cancel me no matter what. Not like I'm a crazy driver and I've been accident free for ten years at least - so is that even important? Maybe I'll look into other companies at my next renewal.
Anyhow, definitely shop around when you move to a new place!
