Starting to become interested in reclaiming our meadow and am interested in experimenting with some less common grass seeds - zoysia seed (yes, certain cultivars come as seeds), aurora gold hard fescue, and floretine creeping red fescue. We have a large yard that I am not afraid to experiment with, so I might try a bunch. But I have not been able to find somewhere that sells less common varieties or non-chemical/less toxic fertlizers, etc. Any info would be much appreciated!

Thanks!

You might try your local hardware store, like Ace. I know they sell grass seed by the pound, but not sure what type.

Call around to some of the smaller supply stores. For example, in Durham I go to Stone Brothers and in Chapel Hill, Southern States.

Not sure where you live in the Triangle, but do a google search for Ag Supply and Feed stores in your area. Something like Agri Supply or Southern States. They sometimes sell bulk grass seed by the pound. They may have what you are looking for.

I saw some Zoysia seed at Atlantic Nursery about three months ago, sold in small quantities. Don't know if they always carry it or if that was a one-time thing. Here's their link:
Atlantic Avenue Orchid & Garden Center - Garden Supplies, Gifts, Orchids, and Plants

best,

Gardens Alive. They have some of the best grass seed available.

Another thumbs up for Stone Bros. in Durham...they used to carry a full line of warm and cool season grass seeds. They're right over the left field fence at the DAP...the old ballpark.

I second Stone Brothers. They are very knowledgable and helpful.
