from Atlanta (Alpharetta specifically). I must admit that apart from finding accommodation (which has been a nightmare here so far), nearly everything else is pretty much the same, oh yes, apart from traffic as well. Its quieter, and a nice city. However, I did hear a few no-no's to stay here from my office folks.

Anyhow, I was wondering if its a possibility to find car pools here, and if this is a good place to even ask people if they'd be interested?

This is a short-term project and I think its not going to be a wise decision to purchase a car, since I am unsure as to where I will be moving after this project ends. The cars here also seem to be a little bit towards the expensive side as compared to Atlanta.

Any suggestions? I was leaning towards car-pooling, but its been a week and I haven't found any interested party

You might also try icarpool.com. It's less local than Daniel's suggestion. But it's a free service... so might be worth a shot.

Craigslist also has a ride share section. From experience, it's really hard to get around Durham without a car. I've been there and don't want to do it again. Even if you only have to go a short distance, there are many places that aren't maneuverable on foot. Can you buy a bike? Another thing to consider and this is just my observation: I think cars may be a little more expensive here, but generally they are in better condition than other places. After living here for three years I see VERY few hoopties on the road like up north. Also, the cars tend to have a lot of miles for the price they want as people rely on them so much.

You can checkout ridetta.org to see if they have any carpool signup lists. By the by, TTA is the Triange Transportation Authority.
