I know several people who have given birth with the UNC midwives, and their birth stories make me green with envy. If my (duke) insurance covered it, I'd definitely opt for that over delivering at Durham Reg'l sans midwife. In an effort to compromise, I've hired a doula, but the UNC midwife thing really just seems like an ideal scenario.
Oh my goodness, I LOVED having a midwife for my boys' births. Mine were delivered in Tallahassee, so I can't comment on area midwives, but they had all the time in the world for me and listened and didn't do all sorts of medical procedures on me. I delivered in a hospital birthing center, so an OB would be right there should an emergency have arisen. I once heard someone say, if you want to avoid a c-section, don't have a surgeon deliver your baby. Good advice I think.
Thanks for all your responses, it made me feel so much better. I'll let you know how things turn out. Any time now.
