If we had to pay the real price of gas, I think we'd all be driving cars that get alot better mileage (and I could buy a car that got better mileage than my old civic which clocked in over 40 mpg), which would depress consumption significantly (30% or better). We might also be more willing to invest in technologies which move us away from oil consumption.

I for one am hoping plug in hybrids will be available in the next couple years. Do all your city driving on electricity, with the ability to use gasoline for long trips. This technology would drop gasoline consumption by over 60%, and provide a bridge for the development of the next generation of cars (fuel cell hybrids). OK, I'm getting way off track :-)
The Government subsidizes our gas? That's news to me...I didn't know were were China or Venezuela. If you mean that they don't tax us to death on fuel like European countries do then you'd be right, but I had no clue they subsidized our gas?

I just shake my head when I hear someone excitedly telling another how they filled up today so "cheap" at their "bargain" station that was selling gasoline for "only" $3.51/gal.
HELLO???? A YEAR AGO GAS WAS ONLY $2.20/GAL!!!!!
and people really want to know why the oil companies has us by the balls!

Filled up last Saturday at Exxon in Tarboro at $3.44/gal.
Filled up Wednesday at Dave's Waves in Avon at $3.89/gal.
Filled up today in Tarboro at $3.45/gal.

Happy with all three!

I'd find anywhere in the mid $2 range acceptable. I'd be thrilled with anything below that. $3.50 is NOT a great price for gas....

If we can go back to before the speculation run-up fiasco and get gas for around $2.55 I would consider that reasonable. BTW, I just filled up at BJ's in Cary for $3.62 (Premium). Regular was $3.4x.

Joe.
