The victim's husband asked the judge for leniency saying he felt the defendent could do more good outside of prison than in. I think that was a major factor in the sentence.

I think the fact that the man accepted responsibility for his actions and pled guilty also played a large role in his sentence. My heart goes out to the victims family.
The young man will not drive for 3 years. When he resumes, his insurance will be close to the national debt, and he will have a felony record for life.
He will remember what he did every time he tries to get a job.

I agree. He probably would have gotten some time if the husband hadn't reached out to the young man and his family. Hopefully the young man does exactly whats expected of him - does the public speaking and "lesson learned", and never drinks and drives again.
This might be a great example of merciful justice if it works out well. He should take the second chance given him.
Our colleges need to take control of the drinking situation that seems to take hold of these students. I realize this particular student is 21 BUT...the bars along Hillsborough Street that cater to the underage college students drives me nuts.
ECU has the same issues.

You're so right. I doubt I could have been that forgiving. I hope this guy makes the most out of his chance at redemption.
