I have an upcoming appointment with the Duke Rheumatology Clinic. We;re coming from the Charlotte-area, Union County specifically. It will be Monday morning.
Me and DH know nothing about the area, the drive, Duke, etc as we're transplants from NJ.
Also, due to the nature of the referral, I'm just pretty darn nervous/anxious no matter how you look at it.
Just wondering if anyone has an personal experiences with the clinic, or wishes to offer any insight at all on our drive from UC ... eager for anything at all on the topic. Goodness knows I'll barely sleep til Monday. I'm pretty excited about this opportunity but I really hope it doesn't become a series of trips there. I simply don't know what to expect at this time.
My wife sees Dr. Sundy. He is a fantastic and caring doctor.
Prior to moving to NC, she was a patient at UPENN and Johns Hopkins. We find that in NC, her doctors treat her as a person rather than a "medical record ID."
She has been seen at both Duke and UNC, and both physicians called her with the results of tests, rather than having a nurse or resident call.
Dr. Sundy spent two hours with her during her first appointment. He also spent 40 minutes discussing her test results and a treatment plan.
The nurses are also wonderful. They know that you are anxious and go out of the way to put you at ease.
It was because of the proximity to Duke and UNC that we wanted to move to the Raleigh area. Try not to lose sleep....you are in good hands.
Hi Sara - I work at Duke. Most of the rheumatology appts are in Duke South, clinic 1J. Duke South is not the main part of the hospital but is attached. It contains the outpatient clinics and the Morris Cancer Center. The best way to get here would be I-40W to 147N (Durham Freeway). Take exit 15A (Trent/Elba St). The exit forks, keep left, then get in right lane at light (intersection of Irwin Rd./Trent Dr). Go straight across at light and you'll see a parking garage on your left. It does cost to park. If you take the garage elevator to level 2, there is a walkway that connects the garage with Duke south.
I work in the cancer center and don't know any of the rheumatologists personally but I do know that people wait a long long time to get an appt!! There is a cafeteria on the basement level of Duke south so if you get here early, you can grab a drink, coffee, snack etc.
I hope you have a very good experience at The Duke Clinic. Dr. Vail fixed me up with a brand spanking new hip, and I see Dr. Keenan as well. We have been very impressed with him so far. I suggest allowing yourself about 30 minutes prior to your appointment time due to parking etc. Valet parking is available as well.
