Windows is Windows... as long as you:
- keep your Service Packs up to date
- keep an active Antivirus program running
- keep the firewall up
You'll be fine from net attacks. Most people infect themselves through email attachments anymore, but yes, running an open Windows computer is a disaster waiting to happen.
