Hi, I'm new to the area and I need recommendations for the following kinds of doctors in the Durham area:

Primary care
Dentist
Endocrinologist
Gynecologist (m or f is ok)
Allergist

If it helps, I'm a 22 yr old female. And my insurance does not require a referral.

Also, is there a good website that has doctor info around here? I've found Duke Hospital to be fairly unhelpful so far. They seem more concerned about research than anything else.

Thanks!

Hello,
For my primary care physician I go to Dr. Laura Berglund (Central Internal Medicine). And for the dentist I go to Dr. Lane of Lane and Associates. Both of these should have websites for you to check out. Also I have gone to Dr. Paula Coffey before. She is a good dentist.

For primary care, I've gone to Triangle Family Practice on Fayetteville Road for years. I think I've seen nearly every doctor who has ever practiced there and never saw one I thought was incompetent or sloppy. The only downside is that, like so many practices these days, doctors come and go. Don't expect to get attached to one and stay with him/her for years and years. Doesn't seem to work that way these days. Perhaps someone else can recommend a more stable situation. In any case, I've never minded the come-and-go.

Primary care I use the Pickens Family Medicine at Duke Medical Center. I see Dr. Smith and really like her but they all seem OK.
OB/GYN is Durham OB/GYN - they have offices on N Duke St and near Southpoint. Dr. MacLaurin is my dr and she is great.
Dentist - RTDental on Miami in RTP are wonderful. I see Dr. Lopez and my husband sees Dr. Cassidy.
The others I am not sure about but check out Duke Health system...they have some of the top doctors in the country for most fields. DukeHealth.org
Edited to add: Who have you called at Duke? The majority of clinicians have to do some research as part of their appointment. You should be able to search specialty and see the clinicians. I work in Neurology at Duke (as a scientist) and we have clinicians who have to include research in their program.
Endocrinology: http://www.dukehealth.org/physicians....199.55-771595
Allergist: http://www.dukehealth.org/physicians....199.55-655707

Hope that helps:
Good luck

Well one problem I ran into with Duke is that they won't let me see a specialist (like an endocrinologist) unless I have a diagnosis from a primary care physician. But the whole point of my going to the endo is to get a diagnosis! Primaries don't know enough to do that.

Also, thanks for the suggestions. The ones closer to RTP or southpoint are a bit far for me though...I live in the NW corner of Durham.

Well, NW corner of Durham... I can highly recommend a good dentist. Dr. Gordon. His office is just off Hillandale Rd, near I85. Or do you mean NORTHwest Durham as in practically Person County?

Thanks. By NW I mean near Duke's west campus. Like where 15/501 meets I-85.

I did a thread on the Best Doctors in North Carolina and since you choose different ones in different fields you are seeking I thought I would share you that thread with the various fields.

Here is a list in the thread of various types of practices of the doctors and the city they practiceFewer than 5% of North Carolina's 29,000 licensed physicians made the list
