NRG- Good call. My family ate(and drank) there tonight. When in Rome.... do not eat at Chili's.

For the record, Poole's Downtown Diner is still very much in business. Not only did I see them serving people tonight, but a friend of mine even stopped in there for a drink on her way to meeting us out. Thank goodness! I am planning to go there for brunch with some friends tomorrow (or is it today?) morning!

Finch's is good homestyle cooking, a great breakfast joint. Just remember that it is CASH ONLY!!!

Did my part...ate at Lilly's tonight!

Also wanted to mention: I think it is important to remember that sometimes we are supporting local business owners when frequenting a local franchise owner.

By the way, I love the term Fern Barn. A good friend of mine loves those places; I would be just as happy never to set foot in one based on the food quality alone. I can't wait to throw that term out next time I talk to her.

Actually, it's staying open as Mad Hatter's, but the owners of Saladelia bought it. The delicious cookies and pastries from Mad Hatter's are now available at Saladelia.

It's fern bar, not barn. I'm with you. I like to taste some food with the salt.

Local businesses can only remain open and contribute to the tax base if the residents shop there when possible. I was recently looking for new carpet for our living room, had checked prices online and at the big box stores and ended up saving over $1.50 per SF on a high grade of carpet, better than I had planned on purchasing due to the price. Where did I get the great buy? At our local carpet and tile store, CW Carpet & Tile in the Holly Springs shopping center at Sunset Lake and HS Road. I figured it didn't hurt to check out their prices, although I expected them to be higher than the stores I had already shopped due to their national level pricing. Was I ever wrong and yet very willing and happy to be able to give the local business my money rather than a national chain.

I made the mistake of assuming that the local small business would be more expensive before this and found out later I was wrong and almost did it again. I got great service, more for my money and contributed to the local economy. It doesn't hurt to ask if the smaller stores can price match or be somewhat competitive with big chain stores, it helps them and us at the same time.

As for local restaurants, I'd much rather eat there than the chain restaurants. The food seems much better and it's priced at about the same, if not less. Otherwise, I have to agree with goat1of2. We have to shop where it's less expensive on our budget. We do shop at Walmart for the majority of things.

Other local places on my list to check out include:

The Roast Grill, The Mecca, Clyde Coopers, and because of one of your previous posts I now really want to grab a brew and a burger at the Player's Retreat!

To this day one of my favorite Raleigh places is The Point (they have great pizza and have big boss on tap!). My wife and I like to grab dinner there then walk next door and catch a movie at the Rialto. Great way to spend a Friday evening in Raleigh.

Finch's is on Peace Street right off of the Capital exit. Great place for breakfast or lunch. Cash only. Wood paneling. Wacky array of coffee mugs. Waitress who call you sugar.
