Anybody know what's up with the swans on a stick in the Cary area? They are small white signs on a wooden post stuck in the ground, with nothing but a picture of swan. I've seen at least 6-8.

I was wondering about that too. I see them in south Cary. It is a simple homemade sign on a stick. There is a picture of a black swan and nothing else. No words or lettering.

They must be having a problem with geese since geese are afraid of swans.

Essentially, it's an "unexpected, largely unpredictable and inherently rare" event that "has a dramatic impact" and "we create explanations for it after the fact".

See this: Of canaries and black swans (http://articles.directorym.net/A_State_of_the_Union_Message_for_Elevators_Of_cana ries_and_black_swans_Raleigh_NC-r878784-Raleigh_NC.html - broken link)
Scroll down a little more than half way to the section titled "Beware the Black Swan".

So you're saying that some bozo has put up signs warning us of an unexpected event with dramatic impact? Isn't that the same as the crazy bum on the street corner holding a sign that says "The End is Near. Repent!"?

Or were they out because of the anniversary of 9-11? The article JDJEEP98 posted mentioned 9-11 being a black swan.

Ah. So it's more of a "remember this event" rather than "watch out for this event". I misunderstood.
