I'm currently a college student in Florida, and though I still have over a year before graduation, I want to explore my options ahead of time. I'm very interested in moving to Raleigh. I'll be getting an Associate's in Internet Services Technology, which means I'll be able to do anything from web development to internet programming. I may go for a Bachelor's once I'm on my feet, but for now I'm hoping to find a job with what I'll already have.

What are my prospects? I know the area is supposed to be a technological hotspot, and I have been able to find many possible positions online, though I obviously don't qualify for them just yet.

Secondly, what would be a good area in particular to focus my efforts on? It would be nice to be near one of the colleges for when I decide to further my education, but I'd also like to be as close as possible to where the jobs are. Nightlife doesn't matter. I'll be living alone, so I need affordable rent.

I guess I'd just like some advice about the area for someone just starting out.

Well, I am slightly ahead of you, I have made the move and came for similar opportunities.

The best area to look for is THE TRIANGLE or RTP! Its comprised of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill.

Hi webdev2b,
RTP is the place you want to be, there are lots of tech companies and the location is convenient to the 3 local universities. NC State and UNC have good masters programs for furthering your comp sci and IT degrees and Duke is excellent for their MBA program.

Since you don't technically work yet, you won't really notice the difference in taxes. Remember, there is a state tax here... Additionally, you also get taxed on your vehicle (I think the amount depends upon how new the vehicle is). Let's just say that the state, county, and city (especially the city of Cary) will find ways to tax you like you've never seen before

With that said, I still consider Raleigh a very nice place to live. There is an abundance of culture and the a great atmosphere for those in their late 20's - early 40's.. Another good point is that EVERYONE is pretty much new to the area, which makes you feel like less of an oddball. As for the tech jobs, you shouldn't have a problem with that. But you also have to understand that your level of pay will equal the experience/education you currently have--keep that in mind. Even if pay is a little low when you start out, don't sweat it and just work hard.. your time will come as you gain more insight within the industry.
