I think you'll get a very good education at Duke. I'm a NCSU alum, but I did date a "Dukie" my junior year and visited almost every weekend. It's a great place and I felt like those over there were friendly...even to a "State boy" like me!
Durham is fine city...I don't believe the hype of the haters. Sure it's not as big as Raleigh or as "collegiate" as Chapel Hill, but it's got a good scene nonetheless. The revitalizing downtown is impressive...and all those brick warehouses converted to condos and shopping centers are gorgeous!
And the Dukie-hangout area of Ninth Street is a charming place...if Raleigh's Hillsborough Street could be *HALF* as nice as Ninth Street is, I'd be happier!
Duke is a much better school than UNC. Who cares what the locals think. What you should care about is what your future employer would think. 9 times out of 10 they will be more impressed that your resume has Duke in it.
OP chose Santa Clara University, hated it, and when last heard from, was thinking about transferring to Tulane.
