Pop...oh pop. We gave it up within the first few months we lived in NC (this was back in the mid 90's, when Raleigh was still overwhelmingly southern) and said "soda" as a compromise to "coke" as you menioned hearing in SC. We'd revert back to pop when visitng family in Upstate ny (Rochester; considered the furthest east point of the "pop" culture, head to syracuse and east and it's all "soda"). When we moved back to NY in 07...we were shocked and almost saddened to realize that not too many people actually say pop here anymore.
as for "yall"...never could bring myself to say it. I didn't have a problem with other people saying it and never really thought it sounded that "foreign' or anything; but I thought it sounded ridiculous when I said it with my nasally great lakes accent (which after 13 years in NC had faded significantly).
Lived here on long island 37 years.....never called soda pop......maybe only heard it referred to as that a handful of times in all my life.....
When we would go camping way upstate or in the mountains in PA you would hear it referred to as Pop.......but definatley not here.........
Yes I know...people on long island and everywhere in NY east of Rochester say "soda"..(except many people with really rough LI accents actually say "soder".)
Can anyone tell me the difference, with maybe an example or two, of the difference between "ya'll" and "all ya'll"? I thought ya'll was plural, but then I heard someone say "all ya'll" when addressing a group? Thank you!
Correct: "Y'all" is a contraction for "you all", which is obviously plural. "All y'all" (which is not all that common IMO) is pretty much for when you'd (in a non-Southern speech pattern) say "all of you".
Now, of course the possessive is "y'all's" , as in "Is that y'all's house?"
