Hi there,

We have been considering a move to NC for awhile now but we have 2 young children and I have been reading about the nightmare around dealing with growth in the Wake county school system. I really don't know if I want to have to deal with reassignments and year-round schools.

I can only assume that this growth will be affecting all areas of life - traffic, infrastructure, community services, etc. too.

It seems like the county is being reactive to the problem instead of proactive. I read that Johnston county is considering implementing a new growth policy - the policy, recommended by a committee of commissioners and planning board members, would allow an average of one home every two acres in new subdivisions. Developers could build denser subdivisions if they show that the area has adequate facilities, such as schools and roads.

Do you think Wake county will take similar actions?? Or will they continue to let builders put up house after house on top of each other without considering the ramifications of the growth? Or maybe I haven't researched enough and they already are doing something to control it.

It just seems that if they don't do something about all the people moving to the Raleigh area (like maybe me ) then yes, the builders will be very happy, but everyone and everything else will suffer for it.

Does anyone know anything about this?

Well, you made a more cogent point when you also referred to yourself.

Builders don't make the market, and don't deserve the blame for the market being there.
Buyers control the cash and make the market.
Builders respond to demand and supply the market.
When people slow down buying new homes, construction will slow down.

Default Public schools & the growth!

You sound like us! We are originally from Long Island, currently we live in " Las Vegas " and we moved here before we had kids and we also moved here right about the time Vegas really started to boom, and i'm not sure if Raleigh Metro will have the same problems but out here its bad, the schools are so overcrowded that the kids go to class in trailers instead of the regular classrooms as kids do on Long Island, and they cant build the schools fast enough to get ahead of the growth.

So i only hope & pray that Raleigh does something now because we also are considering a move there, the school thing is sort of holding us up on our decision.

Where are you from?

MikeJaquish - Just wanted to clarify that I wasn't blaming the builders and I didn't mean that they should consider the ramifications of growth. If I was in the business I'd be right there building! I meant that Wake county should be responsible for how the growth impacts the community.

amsm196 - We're in Mass right now. I would really like to live somewhere else and I thought NC was it but like you, I'm not so sure anymore. I guess as people have said before on this board, there are pros and cons to living anywhere. Good luck with your decision!

There is no way that Wake county will impose something like building on 2 acres. Remember that for every rule there is a loophole. You have to look at what HAS HAPPENDED and WHAT IS HAPPENING to see what is really going on.

I see this county just as NJ and NY, every piece of land will be bought and developed with housing lots getting smaller and smaller. Traffic will keep increasing and even 540 will not be able to keep up. Taxes will continue to rise, schools well... no secret there!

This is the trend of growth in most areas today (not just NC).

As for blaming someone. I dont blame builders but I do blame local governments since they dont seem to represent the people anymore, just their own agenda.

Who do you think is issuing all these premits for building regardless if the town cant handle the increase?

Also (not to start another topic) the huge amount of immigration (illegal) is causing alot of this. Even if they dont come straight into NC, they may in the North or somewhere else and then people from the North move here and so on.

I agree to share the blame on the local governments...Wake County commissioners especially. But with so many local politicians (commissioners and city council members) getting tons of money from those builders, well, I still blame them too.

Not to start another topic either...and I'm no fan of illegal immigration either please note....I can't blame high growth on this too much. I mean, who tears down more trees? A family of a dozen or so immigrants squashed into a tiny 750 sqft apartment, or a well-to-do family of three in a huge McMansion in one of these new sprawling subdivisions? No...there are many problems one can look at illegal immigration as a root of, but not this issue. It's pretty much our own faults.

More likely its the increasing tax base it gives the city. An expanding tax base is more money for the city, maybe they (politicians) can give themselves salary raises without having to raise taxes to support it.
