I want to make a hard cider and I don't want anything that has had preservatives added (e.g., sorbates). I'll try the farmers' market, but if they're selling it "above the table" then it will have preservatives added. The preservatives will kill the yeast that I want to add.
I'm pretty sure the juice I get for my kids at Whole Foods has no sorbates... or is that something that wouldn't be listed in the ingredients? The label says 100% apple juice.
Ouch! $9 for a half gallon! I would hope for 2 gallons at that price. To make a 5 gal batch of cider would cost me . . . . .9 times 2 times 5. . . carry the one. . . . . .um. $90! Thanks for the link but that is too pricey for my blood. Especially now that I'm on unemployment.

Thanks. I've used Whole Foods juice once before. If all else fails, I may go that route again, but I was hoping to find something more "interesting".

I don't understand the "above the table" reference.
I get some pretty good cider at the Farmers' Market, and had the impression from the vendor that no preservatives are added.
Is there a regulation forcing preservatives?

Good question Mike. Perhaps I need to research the laws a bit more. My understanding is that the juice needs to be pasteurized, at the very least. I thought that the preservatives were also required, but maybe not.

Which vendor do you buy your cider from Mike? I went to the Farmers' Market this morning and I could only find one vendor selling cider, and their bottles had "0.1% Potassium Sorbate" listed on the label. I asked if I could buy some without the Potassium Sorbate and was told no.
