I can recommend Grove Park for being reasonable and good commute times to Duke, RTP. Schools are OK; elementary is fine but beyond that, I have not done extensive research. Right now 4bd homes are around $190/250K and the neighborhood has a pool, tennis courts, clubhouse, a lake or golf course (depending on which side of the road you are-lakeside or linkside). The neighborhood is very well taken care of, common areas are immaculate and people take pride in their homes. The neighbors are all very friendly and there are walking paths throughout. We have lived there for 2 years and find it to be a hidden gem in Durham.
South Durham has some very nice neighborhoods too, particularly around Southpoint area. These tend to be a little higher prices though and there are many members here who can give you more information on those areas.
