The meals tax was a ridiculous proposal for a city that already has outrageous taxes. It's good that it was shot down. I don't even know what they were thinking when they proposed such an idiotic thing.
I am surprised that all the folks that chimed in previously that Durham residents would be more than happy to vote in yet another tax increase, have not responded with their thoughts on why it didn't happen.

maybe because of your tone? do you even live in Durham? I voted for the tax because I believe in Durham's renaissance and want to ensure there's money available to fund it. I'm sorry it didn't pass.
No I do not, but I spend a lot of money there. I help your economy. It would have hurt your economy if it passed. Someday people will understand that constantly increasing taxes rates is not the way to go. Luckily the residents of Durham seem to understand that, so I give them credit for it. I will continue to support your economy.

I'm also happy it was shot down. Although I live in Carrboro, I eat out in Durham all the time and don't necessarily want to see my bill go up.
Durham's renaissance has nothing to do with government funding; rather, it has to do with an environment that has a lot of assets that smart people have chosen to make an investment in. More taxation, especially in a weakening economy, would only serve to hurt the community's interest. Voting for a tax increase is akin to taking a knife to your foot, except you have to leave the house to accomplish the latter.
