Thanks elnene2k! I'm going to visit my fiance in Chicago this weekend, and we intend to spend the whole weekend fixing up his place so he can rent it out and move here. He's daydreaming about starting a microfinance institute or a non-profit in one of the homes we would (potentially) help renovate. We're young, too, and can still dream.
I'll miss Preservation Durham's workshop, but both my fiance and I are energized, so I thank you for the helpful info and the supportive comments. I don't know Durham very well, but I know what has worked in Chicago, and if Mr. Bushfan's efforts bear fruit as you are hopeful they will, then East Durham has a bright future to look forward to. I truly hope it happens!
We bought a house on N. Driver (north of Holloway) in December. Our neighbors are sweet and friendly and everything is quiet after 10 PM, no matter what day of the week it is. We had trepidations about moving here. We don't leave anything of value unlocked outside. We have an alarm system. But, on the whole, moving here from Trinity Park has been just fine. And we were able to afford a larger, older home here than we had in TP! I say, come one...come all ! East Durham has some wonderful old homes and old growth trees.
