Planning a move to the Clayton area for next school year, I've been to the Johnston County Schools website and have read that schools are very good for the most part. I know being a teacher isn't the most lucrative profession and the pay seems to be similar to where I am coming from in Ohio. I was just wondering about the benefits and health insurance and the costs that are associated with them. I've read a few post that state insurance is extremely high, any thoughts from those in the know?

If you're a state employee, the state pays for your portion of health insurance. If you're putting your family on the plan, it's about $500/month for the "family plan." If you stay with the state at least 20 years and retire, then the state will pay your health insurance after retirement.

I second everything that LRoyal said. All of that is accurate. The state pays for my insurance and we went private (Blue Cross/Blue Shield) for my husband and daugher. About half of the price($250 paying ourselves rather than adding them to my policy which was $500..basically the same coverage but a bit higher deductable. But we are rarely sick, with my husband having to be half-dead to go to the Dr., so we went with the higher deduct. and lower premium)

Teacher salary is about $6,000 annual less than in NJ where I came from with no union here.(which has its ups and downs).

BTW--dental is not included with either policy(private or state). Its extra.(@$50.00 per month)
