I am trying to make a list of hidden costs (to tell my husband about) that we may encounter in NC that we don't have in IL (Chicago). I raved about the cheap cost of living there and I hope that the cheaper home prices and gas and groceries are not wiped out by other costs that are higher in NC:

-NC State tax is double what it is in IL
-Property taxes (is this on cars only??)
-Annual Car inspection
-HOA dues (i guess you could say that it is similar what we pay for gym membership here??)
Trash pick up is /is not included in real estate tax levied by the city?

anything else???

Are you sure the gas and groceries are cheaper? Orginally from the Detroit area, the gas is higher here and so are groceries--granted not a whole lot, but, I guess it can add to your monthly expenses.

We have to pay for trash pick up where we are currently living (Apex/Cary area) not sure about rest of area---I was wondering that myself.

gas prices in raleigh today are between 2.10 and 2.20 depending on the area.

gas prices in chicago today are between 2.36 and 2.45 depending.

I'm going to research food prices but i have a hunch chicago is more expensive (except milk for some reason....WI maybe???)

Property taxes are on both cars and homes (unless of course you rent), and anything large you might own (like a boat). But these aren't state taxes...they're county & city taxes, and thus vary by where you're living.

HOA dues are only if you buy in a subdivision that has an HOA. Most North Carolinians do not pay this...established and/or traditional neighborhoods don't have HOAs. Only these new sprawling suburban communities do, really.

Trash pickup is covered by the city if you are inside the city limits of one (although some add a small fee on top of the water bill to help pay for it...but it's not bad).

Wink Hidden costs of living in NC

I found most groceries to be lower in price or comparable, except for milk when I was in SC visiting was very high. But as far as taxes and insurance it is much better than where i live in NJ. Moorestown "2005 best place to live" A four bedroom home within walking distance of town goes for $400,000 to $500,000 (and I dont mean a new home or even an updated home) In Moorestown and the surronding areas taxes are 5000 to 6000 on a 300,000 dollar home!
