I was quoted $$2.19 for 150 gal+, under 100 gal. -$2.69. in Durham, Couch Oil Co. Then when said would put off delivery was quoted $2.09. Customers in N.E. NC paying $1.98 for 50 gal.
Campbell delivered again this week (Youngsville) and I was again charged $2.29/gal. Same as on Nov 15. A little fustrated because it looks like according to the graph on Heating Oil and Propane Update the price should have dropped about .15c over that time...I may give them to call to ask about it. They put 148 gallons in.
McKracken is offering $2.589 for a 1-year set price contract for appr. 700 gallons that use per year. They own the tank, and they refuse to "sell" it to another gas supplier. They say there is too mucj "liability in selling an existing tank. They claim that they will come dig it up if I want to change suppliers. Do you think they are bluffing?
I've had great experiences with Amerigas. I'm locked in at $1.69 a gallon, got my initial fill for $1.49, and they hooked my bbq up to my gas line for free! They're very eager to get McKracken customers in particular. I have names you can use if you PM me (b/c you'll have to use my name as well for the referral to get such a good deal). McKracken SUCKS and is the only company that requires digging up the tank. But don't worry. Amerigas will do it for you, put in a new tank, and plant new grass so tell McKracken to shove it. Campbell Propane is another great company to work with - they had offered me $1.79 a gallon but couldn't beat the deal Amerigas had for me.
Propane is an unregulated fuel so buying it is a bit of a contact sport. In my experience teaser rates are the norm but if you call your provider and complain they will typically get competitive even on fuel they've already delivered.
Also - consider the tank rental charge (if any) in your assessment. We use around 120 gallons a year and getting a company to waive the tank rental charge was more important than saving $.10 a gallon on fuel in our case.

NO ONE should be paying over $2 a gallon!

I just called Amerigas in Garner and got a completely different quote. I should say that I identified myself as a new customer wanting to hook up my gas log fireplace.
$500 startup fee, which includes 100 gal of gas at $3.69 a gallon. The remaining $131 is for them to prop the tank up on some cinder blocks on the side of my house and test the lines for leaks. This seems way high.
They do not charge a tank rental fee if you use at least 50 gallons /year. If you use less than 50 gal, they slap you with a $96 tank rental fee.

Could you please give me some names, I'm with Holding and own my tank. It's buried in my backyard and has been for 20 years. I want it dug up and a tank put in my front....so I want to get someone to dig up for free (not sure if I could still use the tank that was in the ground or if that's even a good idea), but you are getting a better rate than I am....I also had a neighbor tell me if we put it in our business name we should get some type of discount for that. Thanks for the help in advance!!

Got another quote. . . this time from McLamb in Benson. . . .
$401.03 startup fee, which includes 100 gal of gas at $2.47 + tax = $2.66 a gallon. The remaining $145 is for them to prop the tank up on some cinder blocks on the side of my house, the labor to run lines to the fireplace AND gas cooktop (materials, e.g., copper pipe, are extra) and test the lines for leaks.
They do not charge a tank rental fee if you use at least 250 gallons /year . If you use less than 250 gal, they slap you with a $75 tank rental fee. OR. . . . .you can buy the tank for $550+tax and regulator for $45+tax.
So. . . . . . . . McLamb is definitely cheaper.
