I'd suggest if you paid for a non smoking room and it smells like smoke, you march yourself right down to the desk and demand they give you a non smoking room. I would never pay for something that isn't what I was promised. I'm bossy, that way!!!

Marriot is NOT smoke "free".

How do I know? Many of my friends have stayed in Marriots recently, had to sign the no smoking paperwork, and smoked anyway.

Seems like in this economy money trumps enforcement.

I'm not sure that "money trumps enforcement". Perhaps you have "friends" that get away with things that they should not. If I were in a non smoking area and smelled smoke, I'd be the one to report them.

If these people are smoking in hotels that are "non smoking", I would assume the hotels have no ash-trays...so I would hope people wouldn't be throwing their recently-used cigs into the trash cans. That's a great way to start a fire. Unless they are flushing them all down the toilet they are probably just throwing them on the ground outside of the hotel...in which case you'd have enough evidence to show the hotel managers and make them do something about it.

I usually just roam the halls of hotels and motels smoking, it relaxes me.

Who are the others that tell you about the smoking at hotels? Where are you staying area wise? As a former smoker I always obeyed, except in Atlantic City where the hotel was supposed to give us a smoking room, did not give us one and told us to smoke anyway.

When I have out of town people working with me, they only stay at Marriott. It's mainly because they seem to really enforce their non smoking policy or give you a new room. I have stayed at other hotels where I have requested other rooms and it still smelled of smoke. I hear your pain on it. I would follow Vicki's advice. If you even smell a hint of smoke, go to the front desk and request another room. I would speak to the manager and let them know you expect to be compensated for your incovenience.

You paid for a non smoking room and you should have one.

I just happened to catch this as a "similar thread" along the way. WOW the folks out there are like 180 degrees opposite from out in Utah. Out here if one smokes you get the evil eye. They don't allow smoking ANYWHERE public including parks and just enacted a huge fine for those that smoke in a car with children present. Actually not a bad idea. It's about time ya'll switched up your way's of making a living out there growing tobacco and get a clue. That stuff kills. But alas in some places I guess old ways bad or not die hard....no pun intended on the die hard Indeed smoking remains perhaps the most single disgusting habit man ever engaged in. No doubt.....

Hmmm....
Perhaps things aren't as differnt as you think they are? You can't smoke in NC restaurants, bars, nightclubs, etc. There are very few exceptions that include country clubs and cigar bars.
Additionally, Raleigh has also passed a law prohibitiing smoking in city parks.
Yep...sure sounds 180 degrees opposite to me.

Third:
  1. Condescending posts on internet forums
  2. Being judgemental
  3. Smoking
I'd rather hang out with a smoker that has an open mind and a good heart, than someone who has decided they deserve the title of cool and all-knowing any day. (And I HATE cigarettes, but LOVE people and am willing to accept them for who they are...)
