My dad is getting into turning wood on a lathe. I'd love to get him some nice wooden blocks for bowl turning for Christmas. Does anyone know anything in the Raleigh area that sells something like that and I can buy in person. I'm nervous about online buying when I can't see what the piece looks like.
Thanks.

If you know where the plaza is with Tiger Direct, on the west side of Capital Blvd, there is a pretty well-stocked woodworking store in that shopping center.

What kind of blocks are you looking for and size? I have small quantity of oak, walnut, pine, maybe some ash, yellow birch... I'm in Maine but shouldn't matter.

There are two retail sources for turning stock. One mentioned above the the Klingspor Woodworking Store. The other is Woodcraft off Pleasant Valley Rd. and Glenwood Ave. There is also a E-bay seller by the name of NCWood that operates out of Archers Lodge. I generally buy from him as he has the best selection and pricing.
You might suggest to your Dad that he check out www.ncwoodworker.net for lots of good info on woodturning and a place to show off his works.

If you need 1-2 items, Klingspors and Woodcraft should be fine.

If you are looking for something special I would recommend a trip to Archers Lodge to visit the folks at NCWood. They have a great selection of domestic and imported woods.

I took a trip there last year when I first started turning and ended up leaving with a trunk full of wood and a lighter wallet, I am still working my way through that purchase!

They have a presence on Ebay eBay Store - NCWood: Exotic Turning Woods, Domestic Turning Woods, Exotic Boards but you can visit their office/sawmill and get a tour of the stock room and personal suggestions on wood. Very helpful folks, I will be going again once I work my way through my purchase from last year.

In Zebulon there is also East Wake Hardwoods, some interesting finds there but they seem to mostly cater to woodworkers who do flat work and not turners. I have found some good deals on stock suitable for turning small bowls there though, so there are some bargains to be found: East Wake Hardwoods - Supplier of Domestic and Exotic Hardwood Lumber
